Details

William qualified as a Barrister in 2011, having spent 23 years in the Irish Defence Forces, where he represented personnel in his role within Human Resource Management. William was responsible for Defence Forces recruits and maintained a keen interest in ensuring that their treatment was strictly in accordance with Defence Forces Regulations.

A firm proponent of democracy-promotion, William has worked with others to help implement international agreements that have facilitated democratic elections in some of the world’s most troubled areas, including Pakistan and Russia. In this role, William was tasked with assisting multi-jurisdictional personnel, helping to drive a collective effort between national governments, the European Union, and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

William has served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Lebanon, developing a desire to study law in the pursuit of reducing inequality. In 2018 this led him to work with the Innocence Project in Wisconsin, USA, where William spent three months supervising students who were seconded to that organisation in both the States of Wisconsin and Georgia. He subsequently participated in the defence of a couple who were accused of murder and who have since been released on bail by order of the US Supreme Court.

A firm advocate of the rights of individuals, William has prepared position-papers on the legal obligations of companies brought about by the introduction of GDPR in 2018. Consequently, he regularly advises companies on compliance matters and has been interviewed by RTE.

He has appeared before the District Court, the Circuit Criminal Court for jury trials and the Court of Criminal Appeal. He has also appeared in the District Court and Circuit Court for Civil matters and in contested Family Law proceedings.

He is an Assistant Counsel at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
